Lubbock's answer to a question no one asked

Forums are down

UPDATE 5-14: My editors are deciding what to do about the forum issue. We’ve got a couple options we’re considering but nothing has been decided yet. I looked into reactivating the old forums but the company that made them is out of business and we can’t control the spam on them. I’ll update here as soon as I know something.

We’re experiencing technical difficulties with our host and have had to take the forums temporarily off-line. We apologize for the inconvenience. We should have them restored in the next day or so. Comment functionality on our stories and blogs is still available.

  24. Another vein attempt by the A-J to block comments….

#23 Nice try for a rebuttal, but you can’t hide from the truth. The next best thing to happen will be for the right wing A-J and LOL to become extinct like the dinosaur it is. Wouldn’t be so bad if they even tried to be a little non-biased,but that’ll never happen. Morris Communications got another extension till May 28th. Those extensions have to run out sooner or later. They are stalling while trying to find find investors to bail them out. Not gonna happen. Newspapers are nothing more than a recap of last night’s local and network news. Why pay for classified, when you post on Craig’s list or everythinglubbock.com for free.

  58. The majority of Lubbock residents have shown their immaturity – using the usual argument of “everybody else has it so we have to have it too.” The identity of Lubbock has been sold out to the highest bidder and not for what is best for Lubbock. It is a shame that their are so many immature people in Lubbock. Soem day maybe Lubbock will grow up.

    Your Worst Nightmare

    May 10, 2009 at 17:29

  59. Welcome to your second childhood. The majority of Lubbock residents have shown how immature they really are. The current “PROGRESS” is regression into immaturity and a second childhood.

    Boonie

    May 10, 2009 at 17:35

  60. Lubbock has had their strip for nearly 50 years folks. It was started in 1960! Times Change, heck I’m an old man and even I understand and can accept that. Calling people immature just because your side of this equation did not prevail this time, now that is what is ridiculous. You had a good run of nearly FIFTY Years folks, look back at it fondly and accept that change is ever constant and move on. Progress or regression is not the issue. If you don’t agree well then go back to church and pray that people will do their best to not make a mockery of the situation. Complaining now is useless as the masses have spoken!

    May 11, 2009 at 07:34

  65. As a former user, abuser, and a quitter of alll alcohol for 44 months. I have to say that being able to buy it in the city limits will not have that much effect on personal consumption, or the DWIs in the county.

I would urge anyone to remember that when you open a bottle of “just beer”, you are opening a bottle of alcohol. Be safe and smart.

    Tarkus

    May 11, 2009 at 09:28

    May 11, 2009 at 10:08

  67. I love it when Boonie is right. He is right about alcohol sales and the immaturity of Lubbock voters. The quality of life in Lubbock has just reverted back to childhood.

Bobby, your comment ” It is normal and legal for adults to be able to purchase alcohol. We just had an election to that end. The people have spoken” is totally invalid. You have had the ability to buy alcohol all these years, if you didn’t, then it was your choice – nothing else. Back to the past again.

Do you recall the age of 2/3 of the voters in this election?
    45+
In the early vote less than 10,000 of the 40,000 were younger than 45 years of age. Specifically those 10000 were 25-45.

As per how you voted Bonnie is your business!
Your desire to belittle those who took the time to vote shows who is immature.
Just accept the change and come August/September when they finally begin selling at your local grocery store you can chose to do business with these places or not.

    YWN,
I hope my quality of life does revert back to what is was like
    during my childhood.
    Heck I loved those days!
A judge and the churches told us how we could drink and where we could get those drinks back in 1960. The people chose on Saturday May 9th, 2009. THE PEOPLE, not a Court, and not the Pulpit. THE PEOPLE of Lubbock, so that gives it the legitimacy it needs.

    How is Bobby’s comment invalid?
The election was about shifting sales into town, which the voters passed, making it easier to purchase.

Your comments come across as spiteful and are in any case irrelevant in light of what has happened.

    thirsty

    May 11, 2009 at 16:15

  71. It is so funny that so many of you cannot handle the truth. Spiteful? Only those of you who cannot deal with the truth that has been written. What you call progress is actually regression into playing follow the leader – no pride in Lubbock, no desire for individuality, no concept of self, total immaturity. Go with your follow the leader immature mentality.

There was, is and always has been the availabilty of alcoholic beverages. Brewing your own is legal, selling home brew isn’t. Lazy children do not want to do anything for yourselves. Nothing could be finer than home brewed wine or beer.

  74. Not to throw everything into a left turn, pun intended, but what happened to ole Kenny Kentner’s whiny liberal skewed take on life? Did his last post disagreeing with the AJ powers-that-be cause him to pull the blog, or did they do it for him? It was a blast reading his kumbayah crap. It was good for a laugh at least.

  75. If you check his lubbockleft blog, he’s said that it’s technical difficulties related to the Forums problems we’re dealing with right now.

  76. # 76 Not to throw a right turn, pun intended, but what about ole man May’s conservative blog. You want to talk about skewed crap! Pot meet Kettle…The A-J deserved to be fried over that editorial.

    Pun Intended

    May 12, 2009 at 07:34

  77. #78

I would prefer to believe that the AJ eds would be above squelching Kenny’s rebuttal, which was spirited but irreproachable.

The AJ chose to endorse an illegal, immoral, and self-defeating policy, apparently to appeal to LBB’s conservative base.

Kenny was far from the only one to take exception to that editorial, which was clear from the comments made to it online. You can’t argue that Kenny’s view was not shared by some sane voices in the readership, and clearly deserved to be presented.

I would like to believe that all this is just coincidence, and that the problem with the blog is just technical.

  106. YUCK. CLIFFY BURNETT, ewwwww.

  107. Woooah…Cliffy doesn’t have a thing to do with the new forum. He was just one of the first to sign up. If he violates the TOS he will be banned.

  108. Hey folks, I just wanted to pop in and get a word in about the new forum located at http://www.talklubbock.com .. I’d like ya’ll to rest assured that this website is in no way owned, operated, or in any way affiliated with Cliff Burnett. He just happens to be one of the first to sign up for an account. Please drop on by, and open your discussions there. Plenty of room, and the water is fiiine. 😉

http://fsanon.forumotion.com — Free Speech Anonymous. (Having trouble putting in the categories, otherwise it would already be up.) Thinks, Clif, for the idea.

  111. The site owner is a regular poster on the LOL forum. After all the complaining about the old site and the refresh to top issues for recent posts. I decided to offer a better forum. In the next few days we will be adding new features and graphics. We are doing this non profit , with no paid adds and no one pulling our strings. We hope to have open discussion on all topics, heated or not. The site however will not permit TOS violations.

  120. Well, I’d say it’s safe to say the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal is officially out of the online forum business, and the “Going Out of Business” smoke signals intensify.

  121. Looks like this will be the place to go in the future: http://www.talklubbock.com/index.php

When my yearly subscription expires with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, I will NOT be renewing it. There have been way too many Lubbock Avalanche-Journal talk forums started and stopped to date, and I’m tired of seeing everyone’s posts go Poof!

  122. I went to Talk Lubbock……..was not impressed. Seems to be full of cranky old people who have nothing better to do than complain about Lubbock. Unprofessional and definitely not worth the time for most people.

  126. WTF you AJ morons. Either fix it or dump it.

  127. Personally the forums went downhill when the editor and the publisher of the AJ decided to ban me over a year ago when I was excercising my constitutional rights…I guess they didn’t like the truth I was saying about their friends at city hall…hmm…how does that ethics thing work out when the news folks are cozy with the crooked politician folks??? I still get better news at the barber shop.

I’m so happy the days of expensive media production is on the way out…now the AJ will have stiff competition from capable online reporting resources who aren’t joined at the hip with most of this towns problems. So long AJ…you had a decent run but it’s coming to an end…your organization is becoming more and more transparent…as more people turn to the internet vs. print I really don’t see the AJ surviving or turning a profit worth keeping the doors open…if only you had reported the stories straight and not slighted for your pals all those years….the lord REALLY does work in mysterious ways…your good friend redraider74

  128. The Amarillo board that replaced the Globe News board that was discontinued.

A moderated board with mostly conservative national and state politics and local Amarillo and Lubbock discussions and college and high school sports discussions.

We ask that discusssions remain civil and well-behaved and that users keep one user name at time to avoid confusion.

New users welcome, and we are especially looking for more discussion of sports and local Amarillo and Lubbock issue.
